Interview with Artist Yuliya Yg

Yuliya Yg (@yuliyayg) is an artist behind the prints for our first two collections.

Yuliya is Russian from Kazakhstan, currently based in Singapore. While studying Fine Arts at University, she was especially interested in portrait and figure drawing. After graduation, Yuliya worked as a graphic designer and a DJ. Later, after moving to Singapore, she decided to fully devote herself to art and continue painting portraits with a focus on fashion.

• How would you describe yourself in three words? Skinny, sleepy, funny.

• What do you miss most about living in your country? Food and sarcasm.

• What do you love most about living in Singapore? Cleanliness, nature and sea.

• What’s the one thing everyone should do when coming to Singapore? Eat chicken rice.

• What are three words to describe Singaporeans? Singlish, durian, jogging.

• The Russian tradition you follow even living in Asia? Festival of pancakes “Maslenitsa”.

• Three distinctive features of your artworks? Contrast, character, emotion.

• Who is your favourite artist? Modigliani.

• What’s your favourite painting of all time? Petrov-Vodkin “Herring”.

• Favourite museum? Musée d’Orsay.

• Which misconception do people have about fashion illustrators? Sometimes people think that fashion illustration must be similar to a sketch of fashion designers.

• What do you love about your job? That I do what I love.

• Where do you find your inspiration? Catwalk and classical art.

• If you are not working as an illustrator how would you be spending your time? I would be DJing somewhere.

• Who is your favourite singer? Theo Hutchcraft.

• What’s the last book you’ve read? "Catcher in the Rye" J.D. Salinger.

• What’s your favourite city in the world? Shanghai.

• Favourite hotel? Mandira Dickoya, Sri Lanka.

• What are your travel essentials? Sunglasses, SPF, book.

• How can you describe your personal style? Oversized and comfortable.

• What’s the beauty tip that works all the time? Smile and two litres of water.

• And what makes you smile? Rain.

• Your secret hobby most people don’t know you have? I am watching "slime" videos and videos of people eating food.

• If you had a chance to have a coffee with anyone in this world who would it be? Leonardo DiCaprio.

• A piece of advice you would offer yourself at age 15? Paint more.
